Serge Lutens
Serge Lutens is a French artist whose career has spanned hairstyling, makeup, photography, and film before perfume. Born in Lille in 1942, he began as a hairdresser at fourteen, moved to Paris to work as a makeup artist for Vogue, and was later hired by Shiseido to shape its image. That partnership led him into fragrance, first with Nombre Noir and then the legendary Feminite du Bois in 1992, and in 2000 he launched his own venture working closely with perfumer Christopher Sheldrake. He calls himself an author, and his perfumes arrived just as the internet allowed unusual, exclusive scents to find a devoted following, making his house a defining example of cult niche perfumery.
The signature is rich and characterful, balancing sweetness and white florals against musk and deeper floral tones. Almond lends a soft gourmand warmth, jasmine adds lush bloom, incense brings a smoky gravity, and musk ties it all close to the skin. Start with Datura Noir or Five O'clock au Gingembre to meet the house, then explore La Dompteuse Encagee and Fils de Joie for its more dramatic registers. Serge Lutens makes perfume that reads like authored work, not product.
