The Different Company

The Different Company is a contemporary French house and an early voice in the rare-fragrance movement, built on a single guiding rule: create and offer fragrances that are genuinely luxurious. Its roots reach back to a now-famous discovery in late-1980s perfumery, when Jean-Claude Ellena found that combining certain synthetics could conjure the scent of tea, an idea first floated and then passed over by larger houses before it changed the direction of modern composition. The house works with some of the field's most respected perfumers, among them Ellena, Bertrand Duchaufour, and Christine Nagel, under a strong sense of design for both the juice and the bottle.

The signature runs warm and characterful, with amber and spice woven through a woody base. Pepper and bergamot sharpen the opening while a distinctive curry-leaf facet gives the line its unmistakable, slightly exotic edge, the sort of detail that marks a house unafraid of the unusual. Oriental Lounge is the natural place to begin, an enveloping, ambered woody scent that captures everything the house stands for in a single bottle.
