Hermes
Hermes is a French luxury house founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermes, beginning in equestrian harnesses and saddles before expanding over generations into leather goods, scarves, fashion, and fragrance. Its perfume story opened in 1951 with Eau d'Hermes by Edmond Roudnitska, deepened in 1961 with Caleche, the house's first women's scent, and entered a defining chapter in 2004 when Jean-Claude Ellena became its exclusive in-house perfumer. Under his hand the fragrances organized into distinct territories, from the Colognes and Garden-Perfumes to the more narrative compositions and the exclusive Hermessence line. The family-run house remains a benchmark of French craftsmanship.
The Hermes signature is luminous and understated, citrus and aromatic herbs drawn over a quiet woody base, the work of a house that prizes restraint over excess. Cardamom, Amalfi lemon, juniper berries, and a soft veil of spice give the style its clarity and ease. Begin with Voyage d'Hermes for its airy, peppery woods or Caleche for the house at its most classic and refined. This is perfume composed like an Hermes object, precise, intentional, and built to last.
