Frederic Malle
Frederic Malle was born into perfumery in Paris in 1962, grandson of the man who founded Christian Dior Perfumes. After studying art history he joined the famed lab Roure Bertrand Dupont, where he learned raw materials and composition from the best in the business. In 2000 he founded Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle on a radical idea. He invited top perfumers to create with complete creative freedom and no budget limits, then put their names on the bottles, a first in an industry that traditionally kept perfumers anonymous. He calls himself a publisher and his perfumers authors, and that original collection is now legendary.
The signature is sophisticated and material-driven, with woods and aromatics grounded in earthiness and a fresh spice lift. Bergamot opens with a clean brightness, pepper adds bite, galbanum brings a green bitterness, and juniper lends a cool gin-like edge. Start with Vetiver Extraordinaire or Portrait of a Lady, two of the line's most celebrated works, then explore En Passant and French Lover for its quieter and greener registers. Frederic Malle puts the perfumer's craft, and name, front and center.
