Etat libre d'orange
Etat Libre d'Orange, the Free State of Orange, is the French house founded by Etienne de Swardt in 2006 under the motto perfume is dead, long live perfume. Born in South Africa and trained on projects for Givenchy, de Swardt built the brand to escape the constraints of the conventional fragrance industry, casting himself as the house's editor and giving perfumers free rein to follow an idea to its end. The house declared its founding year zero of perfumery and drafted its own declaration of independence, and it has collaborated with figures from Tilda Swinton to the Sex Pistols on special editions.
The fragrances are genderless and unafraid, often warm and provocative, with woods and amber under a touch of sweetness and spice. Leather and patchouli give them grit, musk adds a skin-like intimacy, and aldehydes lend a sharp, bright lift. The boldly named catalog rewards the curious, from Je Suis Un Homme to Yes I Do Baby Don't Get Me Wrong and the brand's other declarative titles. This is perfume treated as art and provocation, exactly as the house intends.
